To me, sport is not just putting a ball through a hoop or in a net. The culture that surrounds athletics is one that can compel someone to want to change for the better, and keep doing so. Each young girl in some way feels a stereotype of what is “girl” at a young age. I couldn’t have wanted it less. I joined every sports team I could, and was interested in nothing but the game. Like many other young girls at the time, Mia Hamm was my hero. My dream was to clone her every breath and become the (second) greatest soccer player in history. In my young mind, my education took a far second place. It wasn’t until freshman year in high school when that changed. It was winter, basketball season had started and my grades had suffered throughout the previous soccer season. “Everyone is to turn in a report card with A’s and B’s,” Coach said, “Any other letter on that piece of paper requires a one page explanation and suspension from a game.” After this announcement, everything began to fall in place. I started understanding that my competitive nature in sport worked only to my benefit in the outside world. To me, sports displays a constant strive for greatness. They instill dedication, positive attitude, teamwork and a competitive mentality in people that I believe can only bring positive repercussions. I chose this topic because athletics have been important to me for as long as I can remember. The mainstream culture today displays women like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears as role models for girls. The influence Mia had on me made me want to become a better person. Advocating for women’s sports has always been a passion of mine because of my personal experiences as well as my knowledge of the statistical evidence that sports better girls’ lives. In my comic book I chose many images and words for specific reasons. On the first page, I saw the woman’s back as a symbol of strength. Because she is turned she shows defiance, and the lines of her muscle are powerful. This picture illustrates the first movement for equality in women’s sports. On the fourth page there is a picture of a woman standing beside a soccer ball on a beach. This picture stood out to me because of the woman’s stance and her location. She radiates power and the water before her symbolizes change. I chose to make this scene gold to illustrate a feeling of hope. On page 5 I used a contrast of pink and blue to show the stereotypes that are still present today. Mia is shown large in the middle in bold color to symbolize rising above these stereotypes. I consider page 8 one of the most important. On the top half there are “models”. They are supposed to demonstrate the pressure society puts on girls to be thin and pretty. I chose bland, pastel colors for these bodies to symbolize weakness. In the bottom half of this page are female athletes. They are in bold color to show strength and I chose pictures where their muscles are apparent to the viewer. The phrase, “You play ball like a girl” was used to show what Mia Hamm was up against. The picture next to it shows Mia’s incompliance and the bottom two show her breaking through this mold. In the two Nike advertisements I chose to show females in different sports performing at high intensity situations. I wanted to show the importance of the game which translates into the importance it can have in a woman’s life. I picked the picture of a woman dunking because this is seen as something only a man can do. On page 17 I chose pictures which display anger along with statistics that show progress. I hoped the “anger” would translate into the dedication and failure to quit that female sport stars demonstrate every day. As well as confronting the idea that sports are just games and not important to people’s lives. The last picture on the last page was chosen as a tribute to Mia. I chose her to be the main character in my comic book because I believe she summarizes everything I believe it means to be a confident, successful person and role model to women but also men. She is known as sacrificing all for her team and the picture reminded me of the quote, “The name on the front of the jersey is more important than the one on the back.” But in this case, I believe Hamm deserves credit for inspiring and compelling thousands of girls to become the best players, and people they can be. So in this case, the back of the jersey is pretty damn important.

There are many key features to the rogerian argument. Finding common groud with your audience, and then playing off that commonality is one of the first steps. Being straight-forward and at the same time “plain man” with your audience gains respect, attention and does not take a form of condescendence. I think this stance will be effective in my final project because it will get attention and possibly persuade others to agree with my opinion.

The argument I plan on turning into a comic book is for the furthur advancement in both awareness and credit for women’s sports. I believe that this argument is the “assertion” type becuase I am both voicing my opinion on the topic as well as attempting to persuade others to agree with me. In a way my argument could also be the “dominate” type because I am trying to discredit any argument that believes opposite. Using one type of argument is more effective in my case because the other types of arguments would not get my point across as clearly. If i were to use the “inquire” method, I would not try to persuade people in my direction, I would simply be exploring each side. And the “negociate and reconcile” option would not work because my topic is not one that is negociable. That is why the assertion method of argument works best for my argument.

There are both similarities and differences in the readings “Multiracial Asians” and “Cipherspace: Latino identity and past”. In each text, it is stated that people of a certain culture discriminate or feel a certain way about someone who is a “multiracial”, one race being the same. In “Muiltiracial Asians”, the author states, “Asian-American groups may not regard a racially mixed Asian as a “real Asian”. It is similar in the Latino culture which began it’s mixing with other cultures in 1501 when “intermarriage was reluctantly permitted by the crown.”

Three subjects I am passionate about are 1. Family 2. Different Cultures 3. Sports

I am passionate about my family (and best friends) because I believe that I am extremely lucky to have the family that I have made for myself. I think this is an interesting topic because people are usually shaped by who they surround themselves with. Different cultures are facinating to me because they are so different in such interesting ways. I would love to travel to many different places and experience different cultures for myself one day. I am and have always been intrigued by sports because as an athlete myself I love the multidimensional ways the game influences the players.

I need to know more about 1. Politics 2. The War 3. Global Warming

These issues are all extremely important and relevant in our world today. For whatever reason I have not done my job to be an informed member of this country and the world we live in. I feel that it is my responsibility to know a lot about these issues.

I’m think people would be interested in these topics because they are prominent issues in our world today.

Genealogical- a record or account of the ancestry and descent of a person, family, group, etc. Hegemonic- leadership; predominance Multivocality- having many or different meanings of equal probability or validity Culture- the quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits, etc. Subjugation- to bring under complete control or subjection; conquer; master. Diacritical- serving to distinguish; distinctive. Transversal- extending or lying across; in a crosswise direction; at right angles to the long axis Multiculturalist- Of, relating to, or including several cultures. Atavistic- of, pertaining to, or characterized by atavism; reverting to or suggesting the characteristics of a remote ancestor or primitive type. Submission- an act or instance of submitting. Defining words that had fuzzy meaning to me helped me to understand the overall text. In all text but especially this one, the emotional feel is important. The definition of these words helps to deliver the emotion from the author to her audience. Emotion is an important part of this text because the author feels strongly about the topics discussed. I chose to find the definition of the common word: culture. I felt that this was an important word because although I hear it often I never fully understand what it means. Defining words also helps when readings are long and have as much information as this one. It is hard to follow along with the writing when you are unsure of what certain words mean in context.

Race affects my writing indirectly. Experience affects my writing, and because of my
race, I have experiences that separate me from other writers. My identity comes through
in my writing to a certain extent. When I share my opinion or stories from my life the
reader can tell my identity. If I am questioned about something that I have experienced
and someone else has not, I have more of a privelege to make a statement about it than
they do.

Different people of different races have different experiences. These experiences help
us to learn more about a person, culture and in some cases a race.
